Did you know that Petersburg was home to one of the foremost horse racing tracks in the United States in 1793? Come and learn about a another piece of Petersburg’s vibrant history. Champion race horses were brought here to race and prominent horseman William R. Johnson, “Napoleon of the Turf” based his stables here. A historical highway marker dedicated to the most famous 19th century horse racing track in Virginia will be unveiled. Rev. Pegram Johnson, a descendant of William R. Johnson, will speak and refreshments will be available.
