Presented by Under Auspices of the Department of Historic Resources

A program for the unveiling of the Virginia Voters League Historic Marker will be held at First Baptist Church in Petersburg. Following the program, the marker will be unveiled on South Avenue. The League was organized in 1941, with headquarters in Petersburg. The president was Dr. Luther P. Jackson, professor of history at Virginia State College. According to Dr. Jackson, the League primarily acted as “a bureau of information on the volume of poll tax paying, and the extent of voting on election day. It also supplied detailed information on voting requirement and procedures.”
